Franca Sozzani does curvy justice.

Okay, this is late. Its about the June Vogue Italia issue, so yeah that's a good 6 months late. I know, I should probably kill myself- but hey! wasn't blogging around that time na. And then it slipped my mind until now.
I'm definitely one of those people who believe curvy women should get more exposure in mainstream media, as by ignoring curvier/plus-size women it kinda gives the message that they do not exist. In fashion especially, the message that is sent through almost very communication is that only skinny, stick thin girls deserve to wear fashionable things, the rest can shop at Target or whatever. Basically, a majority of the female population around the world is marginalized, and deemed not sexy enough, not pretty enough and not worth fashion.
At the same time, you need to just take a look at Christina Hendricks in Mad Men, Nigella Lawson, and Kim Kardashian (yes!) to know that sexy has nothing to do with bones. Not really.
Franca Sozzani, the Editor- in-Chief of Vogue Italia, and definitely one of the coolest women in fashion today has made it a personal project to fight against this stereo typing of women. The Italian Vogue website has a Vogue Curvy section which focuses on beauty/fashion tips for curvier women, so they feel as much a part of the Vogue experience as a skinny girl, and thereby extending the boundaries of a seemingly fickle industry. In addition, the cover of the June issue features three plus-size models- Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine, and Robyn Lawley in their lingerie around a table with real food (spaghetti), with the title "Belle Vere", meaning true beauty.
The shoot is done by Steven Meisel, and honestly- wow! these women look gorgeous. Like seriously. I like that the shoot wasn't about 'what to wear if you are chubs', but more about 'so what if your chubs? your still smokin'.
The pictures have a gorgeous 1950's type feel to it, the styling is pretty sexy.
Take a look, it would be an oddity if you didn't like.

    Nice na?
Okay, btw Vogue Italia, is by far one of the most entertaining fashion websites I've ever been to, and a whole league apart from other the other Vogue sites. Should check it out, they've got tarot cards even!

Karl lagerfeld at Net-A-Porter

So you know na how Karl Lagerfeld is designing a budget conscious Karl collection for Net-A-Porter, for Spring 2012?
The collection, which consists of 70 pieces will be available at he site on January 25th.
As you can imagine, people are going crazy waiting for this, because its affordable for real people. I think it starts at $50, and goes up into the thousands for some leather pieces, but still you know- If you want something Karl, mark the date on your calendar. Acha ,so a few looks have been released, take a look. Very rock and roll, very grunge. My favorite element undeniably  is the detachable collar. Would look great with a strapless number.

What do we think?

Jack fever-II

You know how I love Jack.
He's my imaginary best friend na.
So I was reminded of him yesterday, and today I found these hilarious clips of his, which I don't remember seeing before.Thought I'd share. Its so funny.

The Grey Month

Last year was my first ‘real’ December in Lahore. Months before it actually arrived, a friend of mine started to get me really excited about the pending arrival of madness. I found it a little over the top, but invested equally in it nevertheless, cos, you know; what the heck. She insisted that the month existed outside the realm of the entire year, autonomous in its own right. All other months were centrally governed. December had a federal government, things run differently in that month. December had its own rhythm, its own rules and the best part was that they changed every year. It was only when you went around breaking them that you found out the new “updated” status regarding the tolerance and views of the deed.  Not surprisingly, most of the time it’s a close call, and the deed is pronounced “understandable” that year, much to your relief and satisfaction. You’re not wrong, you’re edgy.
December, henceforth, is the month of Moral Grey Areas. Officially - The Grey Month.
Things that around the year can be classified as black or white, right or wrong all of a sudden change shades and become grey. Somehow, the situation is too complicated, and there are too many things that needed to be taken in to consideration before a proper decision can be announced. Gut feelings in these situations are most usually disabled, or on silent. Actions are justified by whims. Nothing is for certain, everything is circumstantial- especially those things that were previously so obviously a certified “never”. It’s nobody’s fault, really, it’s just the month.
It is a month of uncharacteristic leniency towards your own self and others.  The most-oft heard sentence is “So what? It’s not like you killed somebody”, and during the month, that’s a bloody good argument.  You think, ‘that’s true, I’m not a murderer or a rapist’. You’re a saint in comparison, and that's all you need to breathe easy. Moral demarcations that have been clear for the longest time, suddenly seems to disappear. You pretend as though you’ve forgotten whether it fell on the black side or the white side, so it’s only fair that you classify it as gray, as unfortunately you are not certain certain, and in this lapse of memory you don’t want to pick the wrong side. That’s a lot of crap under the unconvincing guise of “moral dilemma”, but in this month you hear yourself give this speech with a smirk on your face and you let yourself get away with it. Duck listening to others, you won’t even listen to yourself. You find yourself doing things that’s you specifically told yourself you would never do. Not again. You run out of ways to tell yourself, baaz aa jaao.

Aur phir aap naye aate, till the next year. The month in retrospective seems to one long, crazy, night.
Foods that were off limits are okay this month. Not sleeping at all is okay this month. Not knowing where all your money went is okay this month. They are the least of your worries.  I racked my brain trying to wonder how this works, how this month is literally the spoilt youngest child of the family who can get away with pretty much anything. I’m not saying people become emblems of debauchery this month, it’s all dirty and sticky, and that’s all that there is to it. That’s not my concern and that would probably be pushing it.  What is far more intriguing is how the early morning fog of the month brings with it this new sort of buzzing feeling, which makes everything fall on the legitimate side of the trade. Anything goes. Maybe because it’s the end of the year, so everyone is haplessly scurrying around trying to validate the entire year that has gone by, proving to themselves that it hasn’t been a waste. Something to remember it by, that’s truly worth remembering, something you could tell your kids and grand kids about one day. Everyone understands the sentiment to some extent, so they let things slide by.  It’s like the end of the race na, at that point all bets are off and if someone acts like a POS, that’s fine- it’s only natural.
Plus it makes great morning-tea discussion so who are you to stop it?
I  actually have a song that characterizes the feel of the month pretty well, but I'll spare you.

What Would Don Draper Do?

I miss Don!
Its been soooo long, I don't remember the last time . I'm glad the larger part of the wait is over since the new season beings in March, so its still sooner than later but you know its still been a while.I was wondering the other day, how did the writers come up with such a perfectly flawed character, that has become an idol for millions across the world you know? and what does it say about the age and times we live in , if a popular culture icon is a troubled man from the 1960s?

Anyway, there is this blog called What Would Don Draper do  , where the author answers queries in the presumed voice of Don Draper himself. Pretty interesting because he picks up his life examples, so its kinda like if Don Draper would give you advice what it would be. Fun right? I'm currently trying to formulate a question for the guy, but I only have girl questions you know? Maybe there s a what would Betty do too. Although, i'm not sure if she's the best person to take advice from. Oh come to think of it I remember I came across a similar What Would Joan Do, although it hasn't been updated in a while, so that's a buzz kill .

Anyway, here's a funny entry on What Would Don Draper do

91. Dear Don Draper, Do you have any views on men using Facebook?

Yes, the same ones I have of men wearing brassieres.

Fun na?
